Band History and Bio's
"Once you hear the Psycho Blues Band, nothing else satisfies"
The Psycho Blues Band began in 1994 as a collaboration of lead guitar player Jim St. Germain, rhythm guitarist David Hernandez, and bass player Steve Young. The aim was (and is) to create music that defies any classification other than eclectic. The band's influences range from Lou Reed to The Pixies to the Grateful Dead with blues and rockabilly added in.
Following a year of constant practicing and refining the band's style and set list, PBB made its debut with the name The Rhythm Method in 1995 by crashing a large party and simply showing up with their instruments and sound equipment. Keyboardist Roger Gray joined the band for this gig. Playing poolside, the band performed a short but fervent set highlighted by sound man Tim McDonald falling into the pool while dancing with audience members. That's OK, though - it was his pool.
Soon after, drummer Chris Souza joined the band and Roger Gray left to become the drummer in well-known Dallas cover band, Famiiar Strangers. At this point, PBB retreated to David's house for intense practices aimed at mixing the band's diverse influences into a cohesive and definitive sound. After one rousing practice, Chris rose from his drums and declared "That's psycho blues!" The last song had been Neil Young's "Down By The River". Chris meant to describe it as psychedelic blues, but the new name was coined. The band then played an infamous Halloween party that turned out to be a rousing success and the band's name stuck.
Club gigs then followed, occasionally playing with Familiar Strangers. Throughout this period, the band began rehearsing the songs that would stay in their live set for years, including "Sweet Jane" and "Psychokiller". In June, 1998 the band entered the studio to record for the first time. Recording at Denny Allen's Reel Grass Studio, the band aimed to capture their live sound, even leaving in the downbeats. Recorded with no overdubs and mixed on the fly by Denny Allen, the six songs accurately reflect the band's live energy.
Chris then left the band to devote more time to his law practice and Sonny Plummer joined the band. Sonny had come from a heavy metal background, playing the large clubs of the Mid-Atlantic. Tweaking the sound towards a harder vein, the band returned to the studio in July, 1999 to record six more covers. These twelve tracks recorded over 13 months' time became the band's first CD, "Live! In The Studio".
The band then played the Ridglea Theater, the Flying Saucer, the Tattoo Bar, the Pepper Mill Lounge and other venues before the end of the year. As the millenium turned, the band made the decision to stop gigging and concentrate solely on writing original material. In February, 2000 PBB began recording the "Uncovered" CD, a collection of songs written primarily by Dave and Jim. The band worked steadily over the next year, spending four months just on the keyboard overdubs. By May, 2001 "Uncovered" was finished and released. "Uncovered" includes "Orbitting The Sun", a group collaboration that originally was written in 1995 and had been worked on ever since.
Sonny then left the band and PBB took a long break while writing new material and looking for a drummer. Guitarist Jim Dimock joined the band in 2002, helping to work up the new material written by Steve. By this time, the band, sans a drummer, was practicing at a shop owned by Javier Esquivel, a longtime friend of the band's. After a fruitless search for the right drummer, Javier himself took the job and has been in the band ever since. In March, 2003 this lineup again entered Reel Grass Studio to record four songs, three of which were Steve's original compositions and a cover of Billy Joe Shaver's "Hottest Thing In Town".
Jim Dimock left the band soon after to work on other projects as did David. David, Steve, Jim, and Chris began a side project sarcastically known as "The Agnews" since their first gig was a Republican fundraiser. Meanwhile, PBB once again refined their sound, revamping the set list to include new material. In September, 2006 PBB returned to live gigs at Deep Ellum's Liquid Lounge. The band followed that gig with a long-awaited return to the Ridglea Theater and a headline gig at the Liquid Lounge.
The year 2008 saw the band play La Grave Field, Texas Motor Speedway (twice), the Bronx Zoo (twice), The Aardvark and other new venues. 2009 opened with a headline appearance at Austin's Carousel Lounge. Currently working on yet more songs for the new CD, the band looks forward to playing somewhere near you. And be sure to ask the band members about that Halloween party!
